Black light

After having phased out both light and medium mortars a few years ago, the Danish Army has now acquired new light 60mm Spanish mortars. This new mortar type has double the range of the old 60mm mortars (approx. 5 kilometres), and also the advantage of new ammunition types: Most importantly a new brisance grenade which does not spread shrapnel outside the target area, making the effect more confined and precise, with less collateral damage to soft targets such as civilians.

It also has a super cool new type of night combat grenade, a black light grenade, the effect of which is only visible to soldiers equipped with night vision goggles. It lights up the entire combat arena but is invisible to the naked eye. How cool is that? Also, the new Spanish light mortar can be fired hand held in direct shootings. I must admit the thought alone gives me goosebumps.

These new mortars have now seen action in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, the first offensive deployment of mortars in Danish military history, and they performed flawlessly. Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah! God I love mortars.
